What Started Me Thinking

  • "Whoever is happy will make others happy, too." Mark Twain.
  • “There is no duty we so much underrate as the duty of being happy.” Robert Louis Stevenson
  • "Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her." Luke 10:41-42
  • “Imaginary evil is romantic and varied; real evil is gloomy, monotonous, barren, boring. Imaginary good is boring; real good is always new, marvelous, intoxicating.” Simone Weil
  • “What a wonderful life I’ve had! I only wish I’d realized it sooner.” Colette
  • “It is easy to be heavy: hard to be light.” G. K. Chesterton
  • “A man’s first care should be to avoid the reproaches of his own heart.” Joseph Addison
  • “Best is good. Better is best.” Lisa Grunwald
  • “Order is Heaven’s first law.” Alexander Pope

Happiness Theories I Reject

  • Flaubert: "To be stupid, and selfish, and to have good health are the three requirements for happiness; though if stupidity is lacking, the others are useless."
  • Vauvenargues: “There are men who are happy without knowing it.”
  • Eric Hoffer: “The search for happiness is one of the chief sources of unhappiness.”
  • Sartre: "Hell is other people."
  • Willa Cather: “One cannot divine nor forecast the conditions that will make happiness; one only stumbles upon them…”
  • Alexander Smith: “We are never happy; we can only remember that we were so once.”
  • John Stuart Mill: “Ask yourself whether you are happy, and you cease to be so.”

Happiness Quotation from Charles Kingsley.

Adam Gilbert at My Body Tutor has a great happiness-project story: he had a safe, well-paying corporate job and left to follow an entrepreneurial dream, to start a company to help people devise diet and work-out plans -- and stick with them! That's the aspect that interests me most: what can we do to help ourselves keep our resolutions? That's the tricky part.

Gretchen, thank you for the wonderful work you are doing!! I share your passion for helping provide others with the tools and insight needed to be happier. I just published (December 2008) The Short Book on Happiness: Transform Your Life in 10 Days, now available on amazon.com and availbale in bookstores soon. Also, Ed newman (Ennyman pioneerproductions.blogspot.com) just interviewd me on this topic. My blog is thoughtharmony.blospot.com and website is davidcanebooks.com.

I hope we have an opportunity to connect sometime soon!!

Thanks,
David Cane

I LOVE that quote! Thanks again.

I love this quote!

This a truely great qoute! So simple, so true. When I read the lists of essential factors required to be happy by this expert or that I lose heart; too much to work on, too many charts to construct, too much research and delving into deep issues (asking myself all the big questions et al.) Etc. I'll get to all that when I'm feeling more confident or optimistic or courageous---which means never. It's an endless cycle of procrastination: I'll get to the work of feeling happier when I'm feeling better; I'll feel better when I finally get down to the work of feeling happier. But here is something to get started, feel better now. And finding something "to be enthusiastic about" is very real happiness. This is like starting a diet with a serving of your favorite dessert; start a happiness project with a project that makes you happy. Eureka! Zoikes! Thank you, Gretchen, for this wonderful website and daily encouragements. I just found it about a month ago and it has made me a little happier already.

Also I can't wait for the toolbox. I think that's going to be very helpful for a lot us. You're book too can't be available too soon for me.

Thank you again,
Veronica

Thanks for those kind words! You made me very HAPPY.

I just finally watched The Years Are Short, and it brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for sharing this.

The quote is fantastic and your site is inspiring. Thanks!

I get Adam's "Daily Inspiration" email from MyBodyTutor.com on a daily basis. He has a great way of putting things into perspective and lifting my spirits. He makes me realize that my happiness is not tied to food. Happiness is an inside job!! I enjoy reading his view of things and think they would benefit anyone who reads them. Give it a try - it might make you happy!!!

Love the quote and My Body Tutor. Adam has a passion for working out and being healthy as he believes that creates happiness. I had no idea until working with Adam, how the foods I eat create my moods. When I eat healthy, I can't help but to be happy. When I don't eat well, I don't even give myself a chance to be happy. And at the end of the day, isn't it all about being happy.

Great quote, Gretchen! I'm another of Adam's happy clients and can attest to his passion for what he does. In one month, his services have helped me create healthy habits that, in turn, have helped me tap back into the more joyful, creative person I am (but have not been in a couple of years).

Thanks for sharing this, Gretchen! I found Adam through another blog I read, and have really enjoyed working with him. It is obvious he cares deeply about what he does, which is a big part of the reason he inspires me. His enthusiasm is infectious!

Adam is my health guru. he has been helping me for close to two years now. His program is terrifice and Adam is a very inspiring guy. Like Gretchen says, he had a well paying corp job and left to pursue something he truly believed in. Very few people have the courage to do that and I wish Adam all the success in the world!

How true, but it is tough when what you are enthusiatic about is food! I do work with Adam and he has helped me find enthusiasm in things that need not be ingested. As a matter of fact, his Daily I helped motivate me to not be ashamed about being big and joining a gym!

Gretchen, you are absolutely right on with this project. I, too, am a client of Adam's (we gravitate toward anything mentioning "happiness", I think!). I have to say, happiness is at the heart of everything we do in our own self-interest, and it's the gift that keeps on giving (a realization brought about by working with MBT and Adam for well over a year now). Thanks for taking the time to highlight him!

I'm thrilled to see Adam's company featured! This makes me so happy to see two people that I really admire and look up to the most connecting.

I love this quote and it's so fitting for him! I’m assuming you’ve spoken with him? If not, you’d realize what I mean very quickly. I've never met anyone who loves what they do, and believes in what they do, as much as he does. He is so committed to his clients it's very inspiring.

Gretchen, just so you know Adam recommended your blog to me about 5 months ago and it has become my favorite read along with his Daily Inspirations he sends us every morning.

What Adam has taught me is that exercising and eating right can make me happy. What he's been able to do so remarkably is help me eat right and exercise consistently. It couldn't have been more than 3 weeks in and I kept telling how him how great I felt.

It turns out, it was the consistency in my healthy eating and exercise that was making all the difference in how I was feeling and looking! Because now when I don’t eat healthfully or exercise I don’t feel nearly as good as I normally do.

I've lost 43 pounds already working with Adam. His program and concept is totally brilliant! I've tried everything from Weight Watchers to Nutrisystem and was never able to stick with anything. I would and do highly recommend his program to everyone and anyone who wants to feel and look their best and/or has trouble staying consistent.

In a prior post you wrote that exercise and eating right pays off big in quality in life and spending money on it (whether it’s hiring someone, getting an iPod, an upgrade to a nicer gym) is certainly worthy of that and I couldn’t agree more!

Finally, I want to thank you for doing what you do!

Adam has helped me overcome my battle with emotional eating and that has made a world of difference. But so have you!

I used to use food to make me happy but what he has helped me realize is that we never crave food. We crave something else. And when you use food to comfort yourself or escape you’re never allowing yourself to identify and figure out what it is you really want. Hint: It’s never about the food.

Adam is constantly pushing me to figure out ways to make myself happy without food and when he first recommended your blog to me and told me about it I was a little weary.

However, as I said this has become my favorite read and what I love so much about your blog is it’s all very actionable. Not theory but things I can do today like exercising and eating healthfully or organizing or decorating for the holidays, etc! Very similar approach to Adam and that’s why I love your blog so much!

Thanks again and I hope to see more of him on here and I can’t wait for your book to come out!

-Merry

This is a post from my blog today (http://www.pickonthefatkid.com):

Happiness is one of the best feelings in the world...if not THE best. All other "good" feelings you might experience will translate into happiness. Over the past 8-10 years, I haven't been happy. I really lost sight of any happiness the last 4-5. Then I decided, I was tired of being unhappy. I looked down deep within myself and found a weak person. I was out of shape, fed up with life, and working my way into an early grave. When I looked at myself, I was scared. This is what I had worked to become?

Then one day, I just got tired of being scared and unhappy and through a series of fortunate events, I met Adam Gilbert. I was tired of being fat, lazy, and a big pot head. None of that was making me happy, so I decided to turn around and go the other way. I knew it wasn't going to be easy, even after the first day. That's where Adam helped me out. Sure he did the normal nutritionist thing and helped me sort out the merits of healthy eating and also made me an exercise plan. But he did so much more than that and it has been important in helping me keep focused on my goal. Have I mentioned that I'm a weak man?

Adam has a fantastic outlook on life. I've never met the man personally, but I can just tell it by talking to him on the phone, reading his emails, or his blog posts. He's about 6-7 years younger than me, yet he's who I strive to be when I grow up. Not that I want to be a body tutor, fitness coach, or anything along those lines, but I want to be happy and look at life in the same light as Adam. In his program, he gives you personal phone calls every week. I'll admit, in the beginning, I was hesitant. I don't want to talk to some stranger over the phone about my weight and all that crap. Then, after about week 2, I shifted directions and actually looked forward to his calls. However, in the past couple weeks, I've missed 2 of his calls....because I was at the gym.

Since getting on Adam's program in October, I have lost 54 lbs. It has been a struggle, just like any other time I've tried to lose weight. However, I have used Adam's guidance to see these struggles as just obstacles or tests that we must pass achieve the happiness. From day 1 he pounds it into your brain that you want to make the decision that makes you feel good in the long run, which will result in happiness. Every time, I put a bite of food in my mouth, I'm faced with a tough decision. Is this healthy? What are the ingredients? How much should I eat? WWAGD?

I look back at how I felt on Day 1 and think of how unhappy and miserable I am. I don't know if I could be here today, down 54 lbs and still focused on the ultimate goal had it not been for Adam's help. Today, I am happy. Tomorrow I will be happy. And each day from here on out, I will do what it takes to be happy. Thank you Adam for showing me how.

This quote is so relevant to what Adam preaches. We all know we would like to be skinny or have a perfect body and can even picture how we would want to look. Many of us actually know what it would take to get there as well. So why aren't we all walking around with six pack abs? So many people get caught up in the short term benefits of giving into their temptation and they never put in the work to progess to what will make them truly happy (whatever that may be). What Adam is all about, is projecting in your head the YOU that will make you truly happy. Here is where Adam makes the difference. He gets you there. He takes it from a dream, to a reality. Where instead of picturing yourself 25 pounds lighter in your head, you look in the mirror and can't wipe the smile off your face because you love the way you look and feel. Giving into short-term temptations will make you happy for a minute; Getting to that place that you've dreamed about all your life...that will make you truly happy.

More and more furious with the virus, the human is threatened.

Thank you for the pictures offer, will keep that in mind.

I think I do understand better now. Does it makes me less angry? Actually, I think it does. It also reminds me that I should do a better job of answering other people's logistical emails. http://www.watchgy.com/
