If I Came to Your Town, Would You Come See Me?

BookstoreAs I may have casually mentioned once or twice before, I have a book coming out in December. Yes, it’s true!

Although it’s still very early, it’s time to think about the book tour. Although we’re all familiar with the idea of author appearances at local bookstores, writers are doing far, far less touring than they did in the past. It’s expensive, and for the most part, it’s an ineffective way of shining a spotlight on a book. Most books just don’t draw a crowd of any size at all, and often now, there is no proper book tour for a book.

As part of the book-tour consideration, I’d love to get a feel for how much interest there is here. So I’m going to ask for help: if you truly think you’d try to come to an event for The Happiness Project, if I came to your town, would you please add a comment below?

Or, if you’d rather, shoot me an email. Note “Tour” in the subject line to grubin[at]gretchenrubin[dot com]. (Sorry about the weird format – trying to thwart spammers).

Just write something like “Yes, I’d try to come if you did a book event in FILL IN THE NAME OF YOUR TOWN.” If you’d bring friends, add “and I’d bring some friends.”

These responses (or lack of responses) will be enormously useful to have. Thanks!

    Gretchen,

As a fellow NYC resident, I’m hoping you’ll be speaking here. But if there are no plans to do so, I certainly would go and bring along some friends.

    I hope it happens!

    • wirehead2501

+1! I’ll come out and say hi if you do a reading in NYC.

      • Lexi

I’d come if you’re in NY!

If you come to Dallas, I’ll be there…with a few friends in tow!

I would come see you if you came to DENVER and I’d bring some friends. The Tattered Cover is a fantastic local bookstore that does a great job hosting authors and seems to always have a good turnout.

    • Emily

I would also come in Denver and bring some friends. The Tattered Cover is a great place for a reading and is always PACKED.

      • amyclifford

Ditto on Denver and Tattered Cover

I would definitely come to see you if you came to Dallas!

  • harmlesseccentric

I live in Cincinnati, and I’d come see you if you came to town. Joseph-Beth Booksellers is the best bookstore in the city; they treat visiting authors well.

  • ElizMcK

Of course, everyone here would come to see you, if you were within close proximity. However, you would reach a much wider audience going on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

  • Khalil Oraha

Yes I should be home in Dec. At this time I am with US Navy/Army as Linguist in Baghdad and would LOVE to SEE YOU

    • Michael Melcher

My former roommate works for the embassy in Baghdad — maybe we can arrange for you to be a videoconference speaker … or better yet go in person! I will carry your bags.

I’m in the Bay Area, so a reading in Oakland, Berkeley, or San Francisco would be accessible to me. If you came for a reading I would definitely try to make an appearance. As long as it’s not a Monday or Wednesday night, I’m there! There are several wonderful bookstores in the area that I’m sure would be happy to host you. Let me know if you need venue suggestions.

  • http://marissabracke.com Marissa

I’d love to come see you if you did a book event in Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, or Bloomington, Indiana!

Seattle – I would drag everybody I know along! :) Family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, strangers in line at the grocery store – you name it, I’m inviting them.

I love your blog, it’s helped me put a transitional time in my life into a useful framework, and everybody on my list is getting a copy of your blog as a New Year’s gift.

    All the best!

Thanks too to everyone who emailed me directly. This is a terrific help.

I would totally come. Mercer Island or Seattle or anywhere in the vicinity.

Separately, I wonder if you would be interested at all in doing an event with an organization, and if so what you would charge. I can tell you more about it offline: email me if you might be interested.

    I really enjoy your work.

    • Jessica

I see a lot of invitations to Seattle, but I’m on the Eastside, too (Bellevue or Issaquah, WA), and I’d love for you to come here. I’d probably drive to Seattle to see you if you were there, though!

      • Kristin

        Second for the Eastside.

  • Marissa Cantrell

I would absolutely come to see you, but I doubt you’ll be coming to Ohio University in Athens, OH. If I have time and/or money, I could drive to Columbus or Cincinnati for an appearance. I can’t wait for the book! It will probably be my new Bible :) .

I just watched the Years are Short yet again. I would love it if you’d even consider coming to Hamilton, Ontario, and if you did, rest assured that I’d bring friends. Good luck with the book, and thank you for sharing.

    Gretchen,

What a terrific idea to ask your fans where they would come and support you if you had a book tour! You’ve gathered quite a following!

Totally in agreement with you about the days of traditional book tours having passed… the suggestions below should be very helpful to you. I am sure your book team is familiar with the book stores mentioned as they are well known amongst those of us in the book world.

If you do come to Southern, CT area I’d be happy to help maximize your visit.

If you decide you would like proposals for suggestions and representation from additional resources, please feel free to contact me. I help authors with meaningful messages reach audiences and opportunities. You are a wonderful person, have a valuable message and there are many people who will appreciate your book!

    All the best,
    Pamela

I would come if you visited Salt Lake City… and I would bring friends and family!

  • Mjx

Hm… I’d MEAN to show up, want to, plan to… but I’m not as certain that I’d actually make it. I have a feeling that this often happens with appearances for book tours; by the time the event is close, it is no longer at the front of one’s mind, and its place is easily usurped by something more pressing, or something that would make one late, at which point the rationale becomes ‘Well, it’s a bit of an indulgence, and the grocery shopping/laundry/haircut/etc.’ HAS to be taken care of.

I don’t want this to be true, but if I’m going to be strictly honest, it would be unfair for me to say ‘Oh yes! Absolutely!’, when I know how I tend to be about these things. Basically, I’m among those who cannot be relied upon for unpromised use of time (if you had a promise from me; then I’d be there).

From what I’ve seen of the author events at the NYC Union Square B&N, however, the turnout looks pretty good…

  • Susie

Gretchen, I would love it if you came to my town as part of your book tour. Only problem is I live in Bedford, UK!

Tour Yes, I’d come to Cambridge, Boston, or Burlington area to see you and would bring a friend or two. After reading Shipping News and Postcards, I called a friend from a book group, left work a few hours early to beat the traffic and we drove into Cambridge to hear Annie Proulx. So glad I did. I understood her work so much more from hearing her and seeing her. And months later she left for Wyoming.

It’s not the things you do that you regret, but that which you don’t do.

Enjoy your blog daily. Love the quotes and have found some wonderful sites through your generous links.

Good luck with the book. I too have been collecting quotes for a long time.

I definitely would come to an East Bay or Oakland, CA appearance. And bring at least one friend. I really enjoy your articles. I love Diesel Books on College Ave. I recommend making an appearance in SF, Oakland or Berkeley, Marin, and the Peninsula. Oftentimes what brings me to a reading is the chance to hear an author being interviewed on one of our local radio programs on KALW or KPFA. But it’s not likely I’ll cross one of the bridges for an hour long event! Thanks for the opportunity to chime in!

If you were able to make it to Eugene, Oregon I would do my very best to attend your signing. I love your blog and it’s incredibly encouraging and uplifting.

More likely if you make it to Oregon you’ll go to Portland – that would depend on the timing of the event, then – work, weather, travel would all go into the trip and if your signing is in Dec or Jan then weather could be an issue. But I would certainly try if you’re that close! ^__^

If you came to Houston, I would definitely attend. There is a splendid independent book store called Brazos Books which frequently hosts readings and author talks/book tours. Best wishes for your book.

+2 for Montreal – come visit La Belle Province!

    • http://enkerli.wordpress.com Enkerli

Agreed! If Gretchen is to come to Montreal, my soulmate and I are likely to go and see her. (We were both interested in Gretchen’s work before we met.)

  • Melissa

I’d come to one in DC, schedule permitting.

  • Elizabeth

    Providence, RI!
My friends and I would come to see you if you visited Providence – and the fact that it’s a (4) college town with plenty of bookstores and readers should ensure lots of interest. I hope to see you here!

  • Sylvia

I live in Brooklyn and work in Manhattan, and I’d definitely come! I love your blog.

  • Martha

I would LOVE it if you came to New Haven. Being a Yale alum, they’ll promote you heavily in the campus bookstore (barnes and noble) and I can think of at least five people I could get to come!

  • http://www.do-one-thing-now.com/ Lynda Edwards

    Hi Gretchen,

I’d come to see you in a heartbeat if you did an event in Las Cruces, NM (which, alas, would probably not be on the itinerary). But I hope you’ll touch down at Village Books in Bellingham, WA; a reading/signing would do well there, I think.

    Love your blog.

  • Peggy D

Yes, I would come to hear you speak! I am really looking forward to your book and hope it comes out early enough to buy for Christmas presents.
Largest cities near me: Seattle or Bellingham. Bellingham has a great independent book store called Village Books. They frequently host authors.

  • Susan

both my husband and I would be there!

  • Name

Yes! I would come to see you in Baton Rouge, LA or Lafayette LA. I would also make my parents and friends come see you in Laramie, Wyoming.

  • Anne

Yes! Do an event at the Kansas City Public Library on the Plaza!

  • http://stylestruggler.blogspot.com/ Struggler

I would be very interested to come, within about a 10 mile radius of Palo Alto, CA – Stanford University, for example.
However, realistically speaking, I don’t think I’d make more of a journey than that (San Francisco, for example, whilst technically close, is a psychological trek). :)

  • Suzy

Come to Washington, DC! I’d definitely try to make it, and I’d bring along a friend as well.

  • emd04

I would so be there…so come to Columbus (OH, in case you confuse us with Indiana, or Georgia…)! We have a Happiness Project club here, too!

  • Karen

Please consider visiting The Book Stall in Winnetka, Illinois. It’s a great book store with an active schedule of author visits. After reading your blog for many months now, I’d look forward to attending.

  • Erin

DC – yes, please!….Even better, northern VA (Alexandria). I’d come and I’d bring my husband.

  • Matthias

I’m a big fan of yours and would definitely come, if you visited my town. Though I think it is not very likely since I’m living overseas in Vienna (Austria). But I’m looking forward to reading your book.

  • http://www.amberwilkie.com AquaAmber

Washington, DC is still very much a book town. I live right across the river in Virginia and this is the kind of thing people would be interested in. Try to get a spot at Busboys & Poets, Kramer’s Books, or Politics & Prose – those are the 20-something book-lover hangouts. I think Teaism (another hip/hippy hangout) does book events.

    • Jeff S

AquaAmber, I have not heard of these stores but love to venture around D.C. and find hideaway gems like the ones you describe. I’ll look them up and hopefully Gretchen will come to town for us all. Happy journaling! jeff

  • pjscraps

I’ll come. I’m happy to do so.

  • Deana

I would love it if you came to San Diego! I would invite a couple of friends, definitely. There are some great independent book stores here – and of course all the huge guys.
    Please come to San Diego!

  • josephmcdowell

Yes, Iwould love it if you came too Prescott Az.. I can’t wait too meet you and shake your hand.

  • Jenna

I feel bad saying probably not. It’s not a function of you, but just our crazy-busy life right now. Three kids, three schools, three sports, plus piano lessons & church activities mean that we don’t have a lot of discretionary time. I am very much looking forward to buying & reading your book though!

  • Pam

I would absolutely love to hear you! However, I live in rural, nothern Arkansas, and if I brought everyone in town that I know, it still wouldn’t be worth your time. The closest city is Little Rock and I’d make it if I could – but it’s close to a full day commute.

  • Tanya

I’m in Boston – well, to be specific, Cambridge – and woudl definitely come to see you. Come to Harvard Bookstore – they do a great job of hosting author events!

  • adoptedjane

Hi Gretchen are you coming to Australia :)

  • lolli_pop_guild

Yes, I’d try to come if you did a book event in Rochester, NY.
    I’d bring some friends.”

  • Katherine

Visit Nashville, Tennessee at Davis-Kidd booksellers and I will gather friends in my three book clubs to listen to your comments on your book and on happiness.

  • Susan Burns

I would come and so would at least one of my Happiness Project friends. Know that you would be very welcome in Minneapolis…

  • http://gwenbell.com Gwen Bell

    Boulder. That is all.

  • Harisha

I echo the Denverites who said they would attend and who recommended the Tattered Cover as an ideal venue.

  • sunshine80303

    Come to San Francisco!

  • Name

    another vote for Seattle!

  • Traci

I’m also another NYC resident who would love to hear you speak. Thanks, Gretchen, for the continuing inspiration!

  • Lance

I’d come with my friends if you were in Keene, New Hampshire

  • Tamara

I would come to see you speak in Seattle AND bring friends! Two possible venues: Seattle Public Library or the Elliot Bay Book Company (http://www.elliottbaybook.com/).

Hope to come hear you speak soon!

  • egibbsv

If you came to Seattle, I’d be very strongly inclined to attend. I imagine that Elliot Bay Books would be an ideal venue. If it were a weekend and you were in Portland OR or Vancouver BC, there is a 50-70% chance of me going and just making a day trip of it with my PDX- or YVR-local friends.

  • Deborah Serrano

I live in Redmond, WA and I’d definitely come if you were in town, but there’s a better than 50/50 chance I’d come if you came to Seattle. I love what you are doing here and I’m sharing it with my friends.

  • Hli

Yes, I’d try to come if you did a book event in Madison, WI.

  • Jean-Paul

    Stop-over in Cape Town?

  • Name

Drawing on my experience with author/filmmaker/artist meet-and-greets, I’d have to say that I probably wouldn’t come to see you (unless I was already inside the bookstore).
After meeting more than a few of my favorite writers, I was left with, at best, not more information about them than previously or, at worst, a less than favorable impression of who I thought they might be. In one case it turned me off to their work completely.

  • kat

    BnN, Union square, nyc

  • http://www.brandxco.com/ Jon Pietz

Yep. I think I’d come. Might depend on the venue somewhat, though. Most bookstores are horrible and overpriced. There’s a great place in Newton (Mass.) called the New England Mobile Bookfair that would be cool for a book signing. It’s not a fancy place—more like a warehouse (been many years since it was actually mobile), stocking what seems like every book ever published. It’s the perfect place for happiness seekers.

  • http://twitter.com/flowerfeever Melody Sowa

Please consider coming to St. Louis for your book tour or coffee or anything else. We would love to see and hear you read from your new book. Please consider putting it on Kindle. I travel and am concerned about the environment and love, love love Kindle books and also the Happiness Project. I am working on my own. Thanks for all you do….

  • christine

Is it too late to say YES! Doylestown, Pa., or anywhere else in the area, please!!!!! I would absolutely bring friends and family, many of whom I’ve turned on to your blog. Thanks for your insight and inspiring stories and ideas–we all need this.
    Chris

  • mellyrose

Yes, I would definitely try to come to see you if you did a book event in Houston. And I would try to get others there as well. What an awesome thing to look forward to! Gretchen you are bomb.

  • arniewolfson

Yes, do come to Fairfield. I think that you would be pleasantly surprised. We have a little town which has been dedicated to great values. I would come to see you along with many of my friends.

  • Jonathan

My wife and I, not to mention friends, in Palm Beach County (South Florida) would definitely come out to see you!

  • salpp4

If you come to Toronto, I will come and bring friends.

  • salpp4

If you come to Toronto, I will come and bring friends.

  • Jeff S

    Gretchen,

Yes, I’d definately make time to come and see you and buy your book, if you did an event in Springfield, VA or anywhere near the Washington DC area. I live in Stafford, VA and there is a Borders there and I believe you would get a great response there as well.

I will bring many friends that I have sent your articles and wonderful messages too.

I want to thank you for being a light in this world. I am a happy person but have had my dark moments and you have given me a lot of food for thought. Along with giving me a sense of purpose in my walk with others. I do have a happiness journal and it is because of your direction and positive light. Sincerely, I thank you.

    Greatful,

    Jeff

  • kimlovestim

Gretchen, i would definitely come to a book event in Portland, Oregon. i’ve spoken to some friends about Happiness Project and a few would also be interested.

    thanks!

+1 you are always welcome in Palmer Alaska. Try Fireside Books

  • Sue Leonard

Curious about the response – whether you have decided to do a book tour based on the response.

I would highly recommend getting in touch with the Northshire Bookstore in Manchester, VT. They are very successful in with book store events because it has been voted as a top independent bookstore by Publishers Weekly. Just a chance to visit the store would make the trip worthwhile, and they do a good job of advertising their book tour events.

    Good luck!

  • lillyfire

I would definitely come to see you if you came to Phoenix, Arizona! The weather’s perfect in January & December. We have the best independent bookstore here called Changing Hands. They host many authors with great turn-out. Gretchen, you make my life better with your blog and insights. Please come visit us!

  • Michele

I would come with friends. Come to NYC!

  • gidget123

Rockville or Gaithersburg, MD. We’re about 12 miles out of DC. Yes!

    • gretchenrubin

I’m not going to make it there on my tour, unfortunately, but I will be in
DC at the Borders at 5333 Wisconsin Ave. on January 18 — 7:00 pm. It would
be great to see you there!
