Happiness Is…Reminscing about Terrific Old TV Ads.

I love getting the chance to meet friends from blogland in real life, and on Sunday, I had coffee with Meagan Francis, of The Happiest Mom fame. It’s so funny in these situations — we’d never met before, and I felt like we could’ve talked all afternoon, it was so much fun.

Among other topics, she told me she’d seen my TV ad, which got us talking about commercials that made us very emotional.

We happily reminisced about the “Homefront” public-service ads that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints ran on TV during the 1970s and 80s. Those ads were so powerful. She and I could both remember them well, and in fact, we both choked up while recounting them!

Meagan remembered best the ad where the father started to yell at his kids playing in the mud, then instead jumped in to play with them. I remembered the ad that opened with a husband and wife yelling at each other, then showed the husband surprising his wife at work, in the classroom where she taught, and writing, “I’m sorry” a hundred times on her blackboard. If I remember correctly, the tagline was, “Love lasts when you put your family first.”

I went back on YouTube to look for them. I couldn’t find those two, but here are a few others; unfortunately, they aren’t as good as ones we remembered:

“Power Out” – worth watching for the hairstyles alone

“Who Broke My Window?”

The public-service ad that I remember most clearly of all is the Schoolhouse Rock segment on “The Preamble.” It came in handy not only in high school, when I had to memorize the Preamble to the Constitution, but again in law school (where I often found myself wishing that Schoolhouse Rock had done a segment about the Constitutional Amendments).

“The Preamble”

Gosh, speaking of powerful ads from days of yore, what about that Yul Brynner ad about quitting smoking? I just looked it up on YouTube this minute. Until now, I’d only seen this ad once in my life, and I remembered it practically verbatim.

“Don’t smoke.”

I was trying to figure out why it gives me such a feeling of happiness to reflect on these ads. In part, it’s the nature of the messages, and also nostalgia for childhood associations, but also, I think, the happiness that comes from seeing a piece of work that’s very well done. For such a short message to be so well crafted that it’s remembered for decades – it makes me happy to see such great craftsmanship, in any arena.

Do you remember an ad that roused particularly strong or happy emotions?

I was always fond of the McDonald’s commercials from the early 80′s. The slightly emotional ones. First haircut, and “I had blue eyes first.”

I couldn’t find them on You Tube, but my webfu isn’t that amazing

Last year I did a post about old Christmas commercials. I had the best time watching them and got choked up a time or two, too.

Like that Folger’s commercial, where the comes home and he makes coffee then his mother sees him? Gets me every time.

    http://www.keetha.com/2008/12/i-dont-feel-same-about-super-bowl-ads.html

I just read that post. It made me happy and the tiniest bit teary at once. Something about the combination of 70s and 80s nostalgia.

  • Kristen

OMG – I can recite that “Who Broke My Window” commerical from memory. Such a great message: “I told the TRUTH!” It has clearly stuck with me , all these years later.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

Wow, Gretchen! I was so so honored to see you post a comment on my blog! You are such an inspiration to me as I undergo my own happiness project… I love your book, your blog, the videos… you are such a role model!

Thanks for taking the time to check out Daily Winner. It made my day!

    Take care,
    Bevin

Oh, thanks for tracking down these videos, Gretchen!! Last night as I was driving home from the airport in a quiet car without any voices or music to distract me, the commercial I remembered loving, but could never QUITE conjure up, finally popped into my head. It started off with a mom looking through the window of the hospital nursery at her newborn baby and dreaming about who she would become, and there was a little song the mom was singing in her head about the baby…oh so touching! Almost the entire song finally came to me and I was happy all the way home. Alas, though, I couldn’t find it or any reference to it online.

It was so great meeting you!

For me, it’s powerful Iron Eyes Cody overlooking the sea of pollution, and the tear he sheds. Still a high-water mark for me, and really messed with me as a kid. I’m no friggin’ litterbug, man.

Schoolhouse Rock is just amazing and I still actually hear it in my head when doing math (at age 42!) So, so cool and quite timeless.

I still smile whenever I think of the “time to make the donuts” guy!!

  • pnwgal

I have to say those Coke-A-Cola ads “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” and the Iron Eyes Cody really evoke Saturday morning TV for me.

I recently read one of the Ramona Quimby books with my daughter and Ramona talks about the dancing cats in what I think must be a Meow Mix commercial and the tag line “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing” in a Alka Seltzer ad. The references reminded me when I was Ramona’s age and TV ads were both novel and real. Ramona gets upset at the cat food ads because she realizes that they aren’t “true”. Can’t don’t dance and they don’t eat their food quietly.

Wow! I know exactly what you mean. Talk about the power of marketing… for me, it’s the Folgers commercial… Peter!

Of course I loved the Coca-Cola “Teach the World to Sing” commercials…

There was a Lifesavers commercial with the father and son watching the sunset! So sweet!

  • Emily

“My lines, my lines, I can’t remember my lines!”
“Follow me boys, I know the way!”
Detroit Zoo ad from my childhood — everyone I know who grew up around here in that era remembers it.

Well, I don’t know about amendments, but do you know about the School House Rock “I’m Just a Bill”?

    • gretchenrubin

Oh yes! I know them all! Though I have to admit, that one wasn’t one of my
      favorites.

    Hi Gretchen,

I remember the first time I heard Almonds commercial, “Sometimes you feel like a nut sometimes you don’t” The first time I heard it I laughed the first time I saw it.

  • Barb

These were fun! Did anyone recognize the boy in the broken window ad? He was Carlton Banks (played by Alfonso Ribeiro) on the Prince of Bel Air.

  • Natalie47

The VW television ads from that era were so well done.

And before that, nothing can beat Burma-Shave!

  • Allison

The first one that came to mind was this long distance commercial, a Mom whose son called…well, you have to watch it:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7b3313ch6lU&feature=related

  • Melanie

Brian Austin Green? Is that you in that LDS commercial? I always liked the one where a girl doesn’t have enough money at the grocery store and the man behind her helps her. Or was it the other way around? Anyhoo, I remember that always made me feel good to watch.

  • Katie

There was an ad for some bacon-flavored dog treats in which a dog is racing around the house sniffing, and thinking/saying, “bacon, bacon, bacon, I want BACON!” My father for some reason thought that was really funny, so when I think about it, I smile, because it made me happy to see my dad happy.

    • gretchenrubin

      I love that one.

  • Erin

One of my favorite from the Homefront series is “Lasting Marriage”:

I just had fun watching several of them at:

I love the Happiness Project!! Thanks, Gretchen!

  • http://richardshelmerdine.com/blog/ Richard Shelmerdine

Me and my friends do this all the time. It’s usually based on a Facebook grup someone has joined and then we’re all “OMG, remember the Coca Cola Christmas Adverts!”.

  • Alison

Oh – I totally remember that “who broke my window” ad – and watching it again, I’m pretty sure the kid is Alfonso Ribeiro (of “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” fame).

  • SusieShoo

I TOLD THE TRUTH!!!! gosh, i forgot how wonderful that commercial was. still lovely!

  • Sylvia

I still remember the PSA Keep America Beautiful ad against pollution – it showed an Indian canoeing on a filthy river and then witnessing someone littering out a car window; the final shot showed a tear rolling down his cheek. It was perhaps a bit schmaltzy, but I never forgot it. And unfortunately it’s still timely . . .

Seeing the School House Rock clip brought back memories of watching Saturday morning cartoons. The one about the constitution was my favorite. I can still recite–or rather sing–the preamble to this day!

  • menopausalentrepreneur

I haven’t seen anyone mention the little boy singing, “My bologna has a first name, it’s O-S-C-A-R.” He made everyone smile.

  • http://www.secretstoultimateliving.com/ Susan Liddy

The ad that still makes me smile is the Coca Cola ad where a large group of people are holding candles and singing… “I’d like to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony…” Then they would come together and form a shape of something that was reflected with the candles… what was that shape… I don’t remember?!

  • elle3000

there’s a commercial line that has been stuck in my head, and it ties in with todays post and yestrdays “don’t hoard your underware post” … I can’t remeber the commercial, but the line was …Underware are funtowear!

  • cindy

my dad started a lifelong Werther’s love because of that commercial where the grandfather and grandchild are sharing a lovely moment over buttery candy.

I also got a kick out the reece’s commercials: two strangers bumping into each other–”your chocolate fell in my peanut butter!”, “your peanut butter got on my chocolate”… the idea of two strangers coming together to create something wonderful is great. The humor is an added bonus.

  • Jennie Floyd

I like the McDonald’s ad featuring a very young John Amos singing with a group of other young men holding mops: “You deserve a break today!”
McDonald’s and Coke always seemed to have the best ads, although I also liked the “Pepsi Generation” on that said “If you’re living, you belong….You’ve got a lot to live, and Pepsi’s got a lot to give.” I misunderstood the first line, and thought it said “If you’re eleven, you belong” and was so proud until my hateful sister advised me otherwise!

  • tracey

I absolutely love commercials – so it’s nice to see how many other people talk about commercials. Funny how powerful they are – most of the favorites are really old – they just don’t make them like they use to!

There is a new series of commercials that I really enjoy – the Liberty Mutual commercials showing all the good deeds people do. I have to confess I’ve even gone to youtube to watch them – even though they are still on tv.

Gretchen – I love your book – I’m just finished August last night.

  • Raj

How I love the old Mentos commercials! “It doesn’t matter what comes, fresh goes better in life…” Cheesy, yet so uplifting!!

I have tried to track down an old Toffee Crisp Ad from the late 1960′s, and had no luck. Can someone please help.
Some of the words to the ad are: (its a Song)
I think I’ll keep on crunching cos its much more of my style
    Chorus goes:
You wanna if you better if you give it a try
crunchin can be supa a dupa dupa dupa
choo choo toffee crisp at sixpence a bar.
Thats about all I remember, if anyone at all can help Me get this I’d be so pleased. Ive tried all possible websites.

  • Jean

If You can help with the email I’ve just sent, that would be great

  • Dolly (Jean)
